Self-help Satire; How To Kick Your Own Ass
80
Would you buy my book
The fact that I have no qualifications makes me adequately qualified to write a self-help book titled "How To Kick Your Own Ass", because essentially that's what self-help is. You assume you need help and before you know it, you've read your first self-help book, opening your eyes up to how truly screwed up you never knew you were. Now you have to read 50 more books!
Some self-help books are helpful, but that's because the author is charismatic and the topics and advice are ones that already reflect our point of views and thoughts. Not many address the real issue with our society- We know more and do less. Self-help books are basically pep-talks, some get it some don't.
For your entertainment, here is a list of self-help books, and my version of them!
Thoughts and Feelings by Matthew McKay- Things you should suppress if you want to stay married and keep your job.
So...Why Aren't You Perfect Yet? by Michael Popkin- A Hollywood handbook to plastic surgery or more realistically the question my dad keeps asking me and the reason I'm so screwed up in the first place.
The 4-hour Workweek by Timothy Ferris- What you can hope to achieve if you have no kids.
Too Good To Leave, Too Bad To Stay by Mira Kirsehnbaum- The way I've felt about going to the theater and seeing new movies in the last 5 years.
The Pleasure Prescription by Paul Pearsall- I think that's called Viagra.
How To Pee Standing Up by Anna Skinner- A guide for feminists.
Couple Skills; Making Your Relationship Work by Matthew McKay- Hmmm. I thought my relationship was already work.
Getting More by Stuart Diamond- Isn't the recession proof we already have more than we can pay for?
When Bad Things Happen To Good People by Harold Kushner- Come on, you must have done something to deserve it. You must have bad luck or bad Karma. Good luck with that!
Simple Abundance by Sarah Breathnach- Isn't that an oxy-moron? I'm actually looking for Extravagant Scarcity.
How To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie- A Wiki leak guide used by politicians, along with "How To Deceive People Without Them Knowing" and "How To Ruin THe Economy Without Taking Responsibility".
People of The Lie by Gregory Peck- Another guide for politicians.
Unlimited Power by Anthony Robbins- A guide for every video game enthusiast.
The Dance of Connection by Harriet Lerner- Sounds naughty, but I bet more of it would improve your relationship.
It's Not Him, It's You by Laura Berman- Excuse me? Rule number one, it's always him. After you read this book, you can read "Why Is It Always About You?" by Sandy Hotchkiss, which explains it's not actually about you. Confused yet?
The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook by Edmund Bourne - What if you have Bibliophobia, a phobia to books? Added note: when I was looking up the name of that phobia, I came across another interesting phobia; Blennophobia, the fear of slime.
Love For No Reason by Marcie Shimoff - A memoir of Woodstock and how to be a hippie. Please note: Marijuana and Ecstasy sold separately.
Getting Things Done by David Allen- What you could be doing if you weren't sitting around reading this book.
Common Sense Rebellion by Bruce Levine- I know more than a few people who must have read this book and truly took it to heart. Let's just say they're rebelling against basic common sense- I think they're called idiots.
Thoughts Without a Thinker by Mark Epstein- For all the blonde moments in our lives.
Thank You and You're Welcome by Kanye West- Things you should have learned in pre-school. This book is written by a well-known rapper/R&B artist and sounds as silly and useless as the title, but if anybody knows about fixing life's problems it's multimillionaire rappers and ex-gangsters.
Using Your Brain For a Change by Richard Bandler- A book exclusively for men. Oh wait, that one is "Using Your Other Brain For a Change".
What Got You Here Won't Get You There by Marshall Goldsmith- Huh? I'm already confused. Maybe the book "Be Here Now" by Ram Dass will help me get here by tomorrow and be there by yesterday. Where the hell am I at now?
101 Things I Wish I Knew When I Got Married by Charlie Bloom- Is that it? Because I can think of at least 200 right off the top of my head. The sequel to this book should be "Why I still Got Married Even Though I Knew Those 101 Things".
Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers by Robert Sapolsky- Duh! They don't have a mortgage and their children are reared by age 3.
Radical Self-forgiveness Practices by a dude named Colin Tipping- Awesome, totally tubular, ways to forgive yourself for something righteously bogus. It's a radical book dude! The Forward is written by Bill and Ted of "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure". The sequel will be titled "Awesome Awareness".
The Last Self-help book you'll ever need by Paul Pearsall- Well, that's a relief. Oh, it's because I'm checking myself into the funny farm.
The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands by Laura Schesslinger- Get a dog and read a puppy manual. It's easier and basically the same rules apply.
Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson- Do I detect a bit of OCD? I'd be a little less concerned about your cheese and figure out why you're reading a book about it. That's the real issue here.
What Color Is Your Parachute? by Richard Bolles- Who the hell cares as long as it works?
Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Klyosaki- Is this a trick question? If my dad was rich, I wouldn't have to buy this stupid book and I could call myself Paris HIlton.
The Four Agreements of Love by Miguel Ruiz- 1. You stay on your side of the house and I'll stay on mine, 2. Don't forget my birthday or anniversary, 3. Never look better than the woman, and 4. Don't talk during a football game.
The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene- Sounds like a book about hooking up your home theater system and operating the remote. But seriously, here's the true story about this book: After an unsuccessful career as a screenwriter, the author wrote this book. It's always helpful to take hints from the people who fail.
The 50th Law by Robert Greene: Based on "50 Cent", the rapper. "Fifty" learned the Fearless Philosophy growing up, otherwise known as street knowledge. He wasn't sitting at home reading a book called "Carry Your Weapon With Confidence". However, he did appropriately title an album "Get Rich or Die Tryin'". That sounds like a self-help book with an ounce of truth.
The Art of Seduction by Robert Greene- I'm thinking Elizabeth Taylor should have written this book because she's managed to bag 8 husbands.
Anything for Dummies and Complete Idiots Guides - This doesn't technically apply to me because I'm only a partial idiot. The truth is I still can't grasp most of the topics after reading the damn books. Is there a "Manual For Morons"? I know from experience that you'll need a self-help book to repair your dignity and self-esteem after reading the Idiot's Giudes.
How You Feel Is Up To You by Gary McKay- This requires how many pages to tell me that? 278?
The Road Less Traveled by Gregory Peck- Where is it because I'm sick and tired of the traffic? I know what road isn't less traveled- the one illegal immigrants take to get into our country.
The Life I've Always Wanted by John Ortberg- And the one you'll probably never get, but don't worry there are millions of self-help books to help you deal with that.
Think Like a Shrink by Emanual Rosen- How to be a bore at dinner parties and make $100 an hour sitting around listening to people bitch.
Eat That Frog by Brian Tracy - Ways to get into a college fraternity.
Why We Suck: A Feel Good Guide To Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy, and Stupid by Denis Leary- No, I'm not kidding. This one is for real and written in the true spirit of Americans.
- The Everyone's Guide to Being Sexy
The first lesson my mom taught me was to be different. It wasn't a hard task. I was always a foot taller than my peers- being different was my assigned place in the world, not a cute lesson or an after school... - My Accidental Nude Beach Experience
Warning: No nudey pictures, just a funny story: I should have known, back when I was 5 years old and still streaking through the neighborhood at which point my mom exhaustingly explained to the neighbors she...

I like your conclusion; "we know more and do less". But isn’t it great that one can find a self-help book to validate your feelings or your thoughts, no matter how odd they might be! "The proper care and feedings of husbands", is that for real? What century was that book written? Unbelievable:))
I found this hub very entertaining! And some of the books would be interesting to read just to understand how they thought when they wrote them! Thanks for giving me a fun time!
I have read a couple of these books, and I am still all screwed up. I guess I didn't understand what I was reading. Most of these are written with a view of the world as a perfect place. Probably some good ideas in most of them, but it is hard to follow some of this advice when your world is turning upside down around you.
Thanks for writing this and it was an enjoyable read as usual.
I need help. I am sick and tired of all these self help books and I need to get them out of my head. Help!
Thanks for the laugh. A friend gave me the 4-Hour Work Week and I thought the same exact thing! No wonder I am so messed up!
Loved it, izettl. Lots of fun to read you letting it rip, even if you dinged us guys a bit. Well, more than a bit.
I hope you didn't read all the books you riffed on. That would be self-help hell.
Thanks for a fun, early in the day ride.
This is a great hub! Self-Help is an industry of its own, and I often think that the sole purpose of its existence is to continue its existence! I've read a few of these books, and sometimes you walk away feeling LESS helped and more broken, even hopeless, after reading them. This list made me laugh - probably the best thing you can do with most self-help books! ;)
Thanks for the wonderful info. Made me laugh and kept laughing throughout the while.
God Bless You!
What an impressive list, izettl. Most self-help books are worthless unless the reader truly believes that what he or she is reading can be helpful in some way.
Two on your list are exceptions; they are well worth a read: 'When Bad Things Happen To Good People' by Harold Kushner, and 'How To Win Friends and Influence People' by Dale Carnegie. Oldies but goodis!
Brilliant and funny love it ..
My thought is though self help books by the time you need help (well me any rate) I'm in such deep dodo I'm probably the worst person to help myself.. Ive always found helping others is a doddle compared with trying to straighten myself out personally but my one comfortis ...Because i know I'm mad it proves I'm not insane don't it ... So I'm happy (or stupid but that's a fine line to walk):)
Put off the things you don't want to do today because tomorrow may never get here.Do all the things you wanna do ASAP same reason, And finally can someone tell me who pays the piper and why because i need a good plumber?
Hi izettl, Great title and write. I was laughing as soon as I saw the title. It's funny how the books that generate the most "ah ha" moments have me convinced we relate because we already know the latest genius's revelations! We are our own worst enemy. If each person could just go with what most of us already know, and stop the second guessing instigated by all these moneymaking self help con artists, our wallets would be healthier and so would our ability to take care of ourselves. I love your style and gut level, tongue in cheek humor.
Good stuff sis! I've read em all (well not all) but let me give you one that I've been reading for over thirty years. It's my little Bible and it's called The World's Greatest Salesman by Og Mandino. Another one is Advanced Rhinocerology. Both of these are much different than the other cookie cutters. Good to have you back, and I'm back in my game big time. When you get the chance let me know how it went at Dad's and any other good stuff.
jim
Howdy izettl - That is an impressive list you set forth here. All the same, I will concur with the Good Doctor bj's comment, above. The two self-help books she pointed out are the "goodest" ones of them all.
Also - a funny thought came along when I read the title of your article. It took the form of a question. What can a person do if the own only a horse and their feet and legs are also sore?
Gus :-)))
Great hub. I enjoyed it. I have never really been able to help myself with most of these types of books. The most effective self-help Book that I read is the Bible. Its wisdom has never let me down. Thanks.
I started laughing as soon as I read the title. I could put my head back and roar YES! Thanks for brightening my day, and in light of the subject, I will say you could have put in a reference to my favorite song by The Eagles, Get Over It.
A great hub that had me laughing also.
thank you so much for sharing
Take care

Do it!!!!!!
Do it!!!!!!
Do it!!!!!!
Write that book, "How to kick your own ass!"
This is a book that needs to be published and you are definitely the one to do it.
Loved this hub, laughed til I cried! Even though I am a believer in self-help to a certain extent, I am afraid that it is usually an exercise in futility. I just remember my dad constantly buying self-help books one after another. What really made me laugh is that he owned and read Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People since it was first published. And, I know he read the book because he has underlined most of it and has annotations on every page. But, did he ever win friends and influence anybody? He couldn't even influence the dog!
When reading this, I felt like I was reading Erma Bombeck! I hope you write and get this book published. I will buy it and give to everyone I know who is a self-help addict. :)
Thanks for a great hub! I truly enjoyed it! Self-help books only make people even more depressed because they find out, in detail, why they are so messed up. Thank you for an entertaining read!
Wow, so many self help books?? So why are we still all screwed up?! Thanks for the list izettl, loved your explanations of them. Rated up and funny, thanks.
Loved this!!!
Absolutely Hilarious. Dude you should be on the local Comedy Zone!!!! I laughed til I cried and laughed some more. I am going to remember you and your stuff; will be back soon. I can't wait for the book, Write it soon.
Very clever and funny... I'm a self-help junkie and have read many of these. I agree with your summaries to a tee!
Great hub - Self Help is a tricky thing. I've read some of these books but don't plan on getting through all of them. Thanks for the chuckle. Voted up!
The moment I saw the title I knew I had to read this! What a great analysis of the subject! The summaries were so hilarious it was all I could do to not drool my oatmeal when I read them! --yes, I am a loser.
As a veteran of reading many self-help books in the aisle at bookstores to keep from actually buying them --again, I'm a loser-- I hereby decree that the first sentence of the first paragraph of this Hub should be a required disclaimer for all self-help books!
Oh my God, that was classic. . . Kanye West . . . how to ruin the economy without taking responsibility . . . GREAT hub, Izettl!
THIS WILL BE SHARED!! GREAT HUB! AWESOME VOTED ACROSS..
Brilliant - you kept me amused all the way through and I've shared a link to it on the daily satire - http://thedailysatire.com/literary/self-help-satir
I think I may run out and buy the "How you feel is up to you" book. I'm hoping they can explain this concept to me. I hope it's a big book, this is a deep subject and needs a lot of explanation.
Your comments were worth reading, even if some of the books were not. Let me know when the Manual for Morons comes out!
I laughed and laughed... what a bright one you are... and a joy read... I haven't read books in my life... The Bible... Huck Finn... maybe a few others... but they were not memorable... I was always a slow reader so I didn't get there with the rest of the class... by the time I could read well enough to see which book I might like... I was already living my life... I figured they must be writing these books to get through their own hiccup in life... I quickly looked around at those holding some of the books, I had been advised to purchase, immediately walked very calmly toward to the door... almost there the nice lady behind the counter said... did you find what you were looking for honey... I said yes ma'am I read the preface of the one called.."trust yourself" I think I'll try that for a moment... lol...
I love your concept... I do live more like you expressed... erasers are my lovers... reminders and friends... I'm still a slow reader but have good retention... lol... oh my... that sounds like some ailment old people have...
Funny list...I especially liked the term "extravagant scarcity". Hey you never know, it may catch on...
Your hub caught my attention because I wrote a self-help book about relationships. I find it interesting how you said that many self-help books are basically pep-talks. I have read my share of them and I have to agree with you.
I relate to how you feel about most of these books because I'm pretty tough on myself and I came across tough in my book too. Saying it like it is rather than giving a pep-talk.
I enjoyed reading your viewpoints and the various self-help books. I voted up.
To izetti: You are so right. I have read a lot of self-help books but have steered clear of many. Many self-help books are very laughable and are ludricrous in their premise.
For example, the book about simple abundance made me laugh at loud. Forget about the many guides for dummies and idiots, I refuse to even look at those books!
Do you realize How to win friends and influence people is 100 years old? Good advice never goes out of style.
You didn't mention the power of positive thinking by Dr Peale or Tough Times don't last, tough people do by Rev Schiller. I hear Dr Peale threw his manuscript away, his wife took it to the editor that published it, also the Crystal Cathdrail is Banckrupt.
One more, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, I read that book twice, I am still not rich.
Oh, this is hilarious!
I've heard men love 'Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands.' Of course they do, they're not stupid! When 'Treat Your Wife Like the Goddess She Is' comes out, women will be sure to love it.
Carnegie's book is one of my sister's faves - and she is power hungry too! I like self-help when it works, but this is sooooooo true!!

I've heard of some of these books but never read any of them. It does seem to me that most of them say the same thing, in a different style.
